TRAI Telecom Complaint Escalation — Sanchar Saathi and Beyond
Consumer Rights and Escalation
Telecom consumer complaints in India follow a defined escalation hierarchy regulated by TRAI. Knowing each level and its timeline protects your rights and speeds up resolution.
Level 1 — Operator customer care: File your complaint with the telecom operator directly. The operator must respond within 10 days and resolve within 30 days.
Level 2 — Appellate Authority: If unresolved after 30 days or the response is unsatisfactory, escalate to the operator's Appellate Authority. For Airtel email appellateauthority@in.airtel.com, for Jio call 1860-893-3333, for Vi email appellateauthority@vodafoneidea.com, and for BSNL contact the Appellate Authority of your telecom circle at bsnl.co.in. The Appellate Authority has 39 days to resolve.
Level 3 — TRAI Sanchar Saathi: If the Appellate Authority also fails, file through the Sanchar Saathi portal at sancharsaathi.gov.in or call the TRAI Consumer Helpline at 1800-110-420. TRAI can direct operators and levy financial penalties for non-compliance.
Level 4 — TDSAT: For serious disputes including financial loss, service denial or contractual violations, approach the Telecom Disputes Settlement and Appellate Tribunal at tdsat.gov.in. TDSAT can order compensation and penalties.
Level 5 — Consumer Court: Available at any stage. File online at edaakhil.nic.in. Consumer courts can award compensation for mental harassment and financial loss — something TRAI and TDSAT cannot.
Maintain records of all complaints — docket numbers, emails, screenshots and dates — at every stage. These are essential for TDSAT or consumer court. ComplaintMitra is not affiliated with TRAI or the Government of India.
